Our Approach To ADHD:

At Integrative NeuroTherapy, LLC ADHD is addressed using Neurofeedback and Functional Neurology methods that help identify disordered neural pathways, connections, and activity in the brain and throughout the body. This is accomplished using several analytical procedures including QEEG/brain mapping, evaluating certain types of eye movements, testing body coordination and movements, evaluating spinal and other reflexes, computerized testing of attention and impulsivity, biochemical analysis and more.

Once all the results are processed and analyzed a customized program is created to move the brain and nervous system toward a more ordered and efficient pattern of activity. We do this by taking advantage of the principle of “Neuroplasticity” which is defined as the inherent ability of the brain and nervous system to change, reorganize, and grow new connections. Neurofeedback is at the core of our program and uses “operant conditioning” (a type of learning) that trains the brain to produce more balanced and efficient neural activity. To supplement the benefits of neurofeedback additional modalities may be incorporated. One such tool is Interactive Metronome which improves neural timing circuits in the brain. Studies have demonstrated the profound impact this modality can have on brain function in ADHD and numerous other cognitive, behavioral, and motor (movement) disorders. Children with ADHD often manifest a condition called “dyspraxia” meaning they have difficulty with planning physical movement and tend to be uncoordinated or clumsy. This increases the likelihood of accidents and falls. Among the many benefits, Interactive Metronome can improve or resolve dyspraxia.

Other methods and procedures that may be incorporated include eye exercises, repetitive complex non-linear movement, manipulation of the spine and/or extremity, Audio-Visual Entrainment, Heart Rate Variability Training (a form of biofeedback), and more. Another important component of our program is Functional Nutrition aka Functional Medicine. This is a more targeted approach to nutrition than that of the traditional dietician/nutrition approach. Functional Nutrition is a holistic method that takes into consideration lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors. Laboratory analysis is used to identify certain biomarkers of health in order to uncover biochemical weaknesses that need to be supported in order to optimize body function.

The benefits we have witnessed as a result of our program include:

Best of all the improvements continue long-term unlike ADHD medication! In fact several studies have shown that not only are improvements sustained after completing neurofeedback training, but many of the patients continue to improve ongoing. In fact neurofeedback has been documented to be so effective in the treatment of ADHD that in 2012 the American Academy of Pediatrics has given neurofeedback the highest rating for research evidence of clinical effectiveness. They found it to be at least as effective as stimulant medication.

Finally, it is noteworthy to mention that we recommend the patient continue under the care and supervision of a mental health professional as part of a team approach. They provide a valuable resource for services that we do not provide which can be very helpful such as counselling/talk therapy. Brain training can help make those services more effective due to improved brain flexibility and better self-regulation.

While the underlying principles to our approach with ADHD is the same for each patient, the individual elements can vary from one patient to the next. That is because no two cases are identical therefore the program remains flexible to allow for bio-individuality (individual differences) as well as their circumstances. That being said, a 12 week program is generally the initial recommendation but this can vary depending on the individual and circumstances.
